Taraxippos Weapon Review: Hung Jury, But Better?

Destiny 2 Guardian Games 2023

Guardian Games has come and with it a fancy new toy for us to play with in the form of the Taraxippos scout rifle. This Omolon-based Lightweight frame weapon is our first Strand element scout rifle and has brought with it some rather spicy perk combinations. And in typical Bungie fashion the name of the weapon is incredibly fitting; Taraxippos (or Taraxippus) is a Greek mythological ghost that disturbs horses at hippodromes. One particular instance of a Taraxippus haunted the games at Olympia and caused several competitors to be injured or lose their lives when their horses were spooked by the mysterious specter.

It comes with two different Origin Perks to choose from in the fifth column with Omolon Fluid Dynamics and the Guardian Games exclusive perk, Classy Contender, which grants class energy back on kills.

However, the more exciting columns to explore are the third and fourth columns that provide some potentially very strong combinations when combined with the right class setup. Here are some God Rolls to chase.

The best PvE God Rolls for Taraxippos

  • Barrel: Corkscrew Rifling or Hammer-Forged Rifling
  • Magazine: Accurized Rounds or Tactical Mag
  • Column 3: Gutshot Straight or Fourth Time’s the Charm
  • Column 4: Hatchling
  • Origin Perk: Omolon Fluid Dynamics

If you’re a Strand Warlock with a build centered around Threadlings, then you would want to obtain this roll. It synergizes very well with anything that triggers the Threadlings to spawn, but Strand Warlocks benefit from this weapon the strongest. Fourth Time’s the Charm will give you the most bang for your buck when scoring multiple Precision Hits from a distance and keeping your magazine topped up from the reloads. Omolon Fluid Dynamics will give you even more stability and accuracy if you constantly reload as well.

  • Barrel: Corkscrew Rifling or Arrowhead Brake
  • Magazine: Accurized Rounds or Flared Magwell
  • Column 3: Offhand Strike or Fourth Time’s the Charm
  • Column 4: Kill Clip
  • Origin Perk: Omolon Fluid Dynamics

This perk combination is much more generalized towards any class with lots more accuracy and speedy reloads. Kill Clip acts as your main source of damage boosts and Offhand Strike gives you more versatility when in more intense combat where ADS isn’t possible or more difficult. Combined with Omolon Fluid Dynamics, reloads can happen quick which keeps the damage boost from Kill Clip up often.

The best PvP God Rolls for Taraxippos

  • Barrel: Corkscrew Rifling or Hammer-Forged Rifling
  • Magazine: Accurized Rounds or Tactical Mag
  • Column 3: Gutshot Straight
  • Column 4: Explosive Payload
  • Origin Perk: Omolon Fluid Dynamics or Classy Contender

Explosive Payload guns benefit from splitting the damage into two distinct hits. The explosive damage has less damage falloff from range and produces more flinch than normal hits, making sniping more difficult. This perk combination is good for general PvP applications, but TTK is outclassed by Exotic scout rifles like Dead Man’s Tale or The Jade Rabbit. If you want a more rapid-fire weapon than those, this is where to look especially if your Exotic weapon slot is already used.

  • Barrel: Corkscrew Rifling or Hammer-Forged Rifling
  • Magazine: Accurized Rounds
  • Column 3: Outlaw or Fourth Time’s the Charm
  • Column 4: Kill Clip
  • Origin Perk: Omolon Fluid Dynamics

This perk combination will produce much stronger TTK in the right hands especially when dealing with multiple players close to each other. The classic Outlaw and Kill Clip synergy shines brightest here and will work with any class. Combine with Strand and Unraveling Rounds for especially strong kill streak potential in 6v6 modes like Iron Banner or the current Supremacy playlist in Guardian Games.

Taraxippos Weapon Review

Overall, this is an excellent Scout Rifle in a slot dominated by only a small handful of Legendary choices and typically outclassed by Exotics. While scout rifles have largely fallen off the bandwagon at higher tiers of PvP, PvE players will enjoy the new element and subclass perks that play well with possible rolls of this weapon. Being a Lightweight Frame, mobility is key especially in PvP where positioning can determine who wins a gunfight.

Compared to its sister weapon, the Hung Jury SR4, Taraxippos actually has better possible perk combinations and being a Strand weapon plays better with subclass perks. Even the Adept version of Hung Jury can be outclassed by Taraxippos, but the Hung Jury does possess more Range and is largely more stable along with the ability to equip Adept Mods. But the perk combinations for Hung Jury aren’t as potent as Taraxippos’ can be if you get the right combinations.

Preference is largely up to you on which Omolon scout rifle you prefer, but Taraxippos presents a strong option that was once largely dominated by only a couple choice guns.
